The carranca, bow head or boat lion is a wooden sculpture with anthropomorphic or zoomorphic features used on the bow of boats that sail along the São Francisco River in Brazil. According to tradition it warns the boatman that the ship will sink with three moans. It also drives away evil spirits such as the mother of water, the nego d'água and the surubim-rei.
